Twenty dollars a month does not sound like much. It is the easiest subscription in the world to justify, right up until you notice it sitting next to Claude, next to Perplexity, next to the image generator and the writing assistant, and you realize your AI tools alone are costing you the better part of a hundred dollars a month.
So the real question is not just whether there is a cheaper ChatGPT Plus. It is whether there is a smarter way to pay for all of your AI tools at once. Here is the answer.
What you are really paying for
ChatGPT Plus gives you priority access to the latest models, higher limits, and the features the free tier throttles. For anyone using it daily for work, it earns its $20. The issue is rarely that one subscription, it is the pile of AI subscriptions it tends to sit on top of.
The free and cheaper options
- The free tier of ChatGPT is far more capable than it was a couple of years ago and handles a lot of everyday work.
- Free tiers of the rivals, from Claude to Google’s Gemini to Perplexity, are each strong, and rotating between them covers a surprising amount.
- Pay-as-you-go API access can be cheaper than a flat subscription if your usage is light and you do not mind a little setup.
These are real options. But juggling five free tiers and hitting a limit right when you are in flow is its own kind of tax, and the moment you want the paid versions of several AI tools, you are back to the subscription pile we broke down here.
The option worth knowing: shared access
Shared-access bundles like ToolSuite include ChatGPT Plus alongside the other premium AI tools, the research assistants, the image generators, the writing tools, through a single login for $29.95 a month or $349.95 once for lifetime. For a little more than ChatGPT Plus alone, you get the whole AI toolkit. Our guide to the best AI tools for creators and sellers walks through which ones actually matter.
To be clear: shared access means you do not get your own private account or saved history in the way a personal subscription gives you, and for sensitive or confidential work you may well want your own seat. For general research, writing and ideation, it is a very efficient way to use premium AI without the premium stack of bills. Full details in our ToolSuite review.
The bottom line
If ChatGPT is the only AI tool you use and you handle sensitive work in it, keep your own subscription. If you use several AI tools and the combined bill is the real pain, shared access gets you all of them for less than two of them cost separately.
